The 18th-century English writer, Sir Richard Steele, once said that "Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body." In this spirit we have compiled a variety of reading lists to provide you with opportunities for a good mental work out. We also hope that you will discover books which will provide hours of pleasure and inspiration.
The titles which we suggest are selected with a view to reflecting not only the different reading levels of students at every grade but, also the range of interests which exists. For this reason, you will find recommended reading lists of fiction and non-fiction. Remember, what you read is not as important as that you read.
Reading should be a daily activity. Students should read a minimum of 20 minutes every day. The rewards will be tremendous; both in the pleasure of reading great stories, as well as simultaneously giving the mind a regular and rigorous work out.
A great book should leave you with many
experiences and slightly exhausted at the end.
You should live several lives while reading it.
~ William Styron ~
Please be advised that there are a wide range of novels on these reading lists. Some of them are recommended for more "sophisticated" readers as they deal with "mature" themes and may contain some "realistic" language and some "explicit" material.
