33rd Ed Meagher Sports Tournament January 22-25, 2003

Sports Tournament 2010
Honorary Chairperson

Richard Meagher

The 2010 Loyola - Ed Meagher Sports Tournament Committee is proud to introduce this year’s Honorary Chairperson, Richard Meagher.

The name “Meagher” will forever be associated with Loyola’s winter sports tournament, but in the hearts of those involved, it is Richard Meagher’s name almost as much as it is Ed’s. It is a great privilege to have Mr. Richard Meagher as this year’s honorary chairman.

Richard came to teach at Loyola back in 1994 after having begun a career in the business world. From that time, his involvement in the school has been extraordinary, as teacher, coach, vice-principal and, of course, the primary tournament organizer. Following in the footsteps of his father, he has most recently been very involved in re-energizing the school’s House League sports program for which hundreds of “ultimaters” are extremely grateful. Ed Meagher always loved the unsung hero, the hard-working backbone to any team or organization. The scholarship that bears his name honours those athletes that live that ideal on Loyola’s teams. This year, we honour a man who lives that very same ideal in all the work he does, particularly in the organization of this tournament.

Richard is one of the most hard-working and competent men that one could ever know, and yet it seems that he sets as his goal that it be others who stand in the limelight. One can often find him in his office in the early morning hours or on weekends when nobody else is around, working on his classes, the organization of the school or the tournament or posting the pictures and stats that adorn the House League pillar outside the main office. Anyone who knows him at all is aware of his diligence, but there is also a creative, almost impish side to Richard that becomes more and more apparent with familiarity. The varied class competitions for the half-day holiday that take place during this tournament all come from the mischievous mind of Meagher. (This same puckishness works its magic during many faculty and tournament meetings as well.)

We often think of the values and ideals that are at the core of this tournament as the legacy left to us by Ed Meagher, but nowhere is Ed’s legacy more clearly seen than in his son Richard, whom we honour today. Thank you Richard for all you do, we are quite sure that Ed is smiling with pride.
