33rd Ed Meagher Sports Tournament January 22-25, 2003

Ed Meagher Scholarship

Each year the Loyola Sports Tournament Committee donates a $1000 scholarship to a graduating student in the name of Ed Meagher. Ed was a teacher, coach, administrator and alumni director at Loyola for close to half a century. He inaugurated this popular sports tournament in 1971. At the opening ceremony of the 1999 Sports Tournament, the first ever Loyola sweater number was retired – Ed Meagher’s hockey number, #11. The Concordia Arena was re-named the Ed Meagher Arena on January 28, 2000. Ed Meagher died on November 7, 1995.

The recipient of the scholarship through his years at Loyola must have been involved in athletics either as a player, manager, organizer or volunteer worker. Through his participation, the recipient must have demonstrated those ideals and values espoused by Ed Meagher – namely integrity, commitment, responsibility, fairness and good sportsmanship.

2011 ED MEAGHER SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

It is an honour and a pleasure to introduce this year’s recipient of the Ed Meagher Scholarship - Erik Samuel. He was very active in all aspects of school life and particularly excelled in football, hockey and rugby.

Words that come to mind to describe his character, both in school and on the playing fields, are commitment, sacrifice and hard work. He made sacrifices in order to achieve his goals. For his peers, he was a true role model of the qualities that Ed Meagher so admired in his students and players. He is a truly remarkable young man who is proud, honorable and devoted to Loyola.

He is a true Warrior deserving of a scholarship named after the ultimate Warrior, Ed Meagher. Congratulations, Erik!
