33rd Ed Meagher Sports Tournament January 22-25, 2003

Ed Meagher Scholarship

Each year the Loyola Sports Tournament Committee donates a $1000 scholarship to a graduating student in the name of Ed Meagher. Ed was a teacher, coach, administrator and alumni director at Loyola for close to half a century. He inaugurated this popular sports tournament in 1971. At the opening ceremony of the 1999 Sports Tournament, the first ever Loyola sweater number was retired – Ed Meagher’s hockey number, #11. The Concordia Arena was re-named the Ed Meagher Arena on January 28, 2000. Ed Meagher died on November 7, 1995.

The recipient of the scholarship through his years at Loyola must have been involved in athletics either as a player, manager, organizer or volunteer worker. Through his participation, the recipient must have demonstrated those ideals and values espoused by Ed Meagher – namely integrity, commitment, responsibility, fairness and good sportsmanship.

2009 ED MEAGHER SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

It is an honour and a pleasure to introduce this year’s recipient of the Ed Meagher Scholarship – Jonathan Pendenza. In his early years at Loyola, Jonathan played for the Pee Wee Scouts and then the Bantam Braves. He concluded his terrific, five-year Loyola hockey career, as the Captain of the Juvenile Warriors. He displayed his leadership qualities in all aspects of school life, especially as a member of the Maroon and White honours society and the Loyola Walk-A-Thon committee. Words that come to mind to describe his character, both in school and on the ice, are commitment, sacrifice and hard work. For his peers, he was a true role model of the qualities that Ed Meagher so admired in his students and players. The Loyola - Ed Meagher Sports Tournament is proud to have Jonathan represent the class of ’09. He is a true Warrior, deserving of a scholarship named after the ultimate Warrior, Ed Meagher. Congratulations Jonathan!.
